Summary: Collection consists of the papers and published poems of Haniel and Alice Lavinia Long, 1908-1990. The bulk of the collection consists of the Long's poems and related materials, 1916-1977. Haniel Long's epic poems of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca's journey in 1528 (The Marvelous Journey of Cabeza de Vaca) and Dona Marina's (Malinche) life with Hernan Cortes, are included. Related materials consist of book reviews and bibliographic information. The Long papers contain Haniel Long's correspondence (1944-1954), his son, Anton V. Long's correspondence (1967- 1987), and a miscellaneous newspaper and publication.

Haniel Long was born in Burma in 1888 and brought to Pittsburgh at the age of three. He went on to graduate from Harvard and came back to Pittsburgh to teach literature at Carnegie Tech. Seeking a healthier climate than industrial Pittsburgh, he eventually went to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1929. He was the author of many books, chiefly on poetry and the Southwest.
